Mr. Shantilal Sonawala -

Shantibhai, as Shri Sonawala was popularly known, was the Managing Partner of the firm M/s. Motilal Vijbhukhandas, one of the oldest firms in his bullion trade in the country.

Shantibhai was President of the Association from 1981 to 1992 and shortly afterwards he was honored as President Emeritus of the Association.

Author of a thesis on the Bullion Trade in India, Shantibhai had written many articles for numerous national and international publications on various economic subjects, but principally on bullion. He was also invited to deliver a speech at the International precious Metal conference in Chicago in 1980.

Shantibhai was widely consulted by the government of the India and many Indian and foreign organizations on the Indian gold market.

He played a vital role in persuading the Indian government to open up the bullion trade and introduce futures trading in commodities. He was also associated with the governments gold bond scheme introduced in early nineties.

Shantibhai was also chairman of Hinditron group of companies In that company his sons Hemant and Kamlesh are the promoters.

Late Shri Shantilal Sonawala (1914-1999) was the foremost authority on matters relating to bullion. He had several distinctions in this field and was internationally known for his knowledge and wisdom of the Bullion Trade. He was invited to deliver a speech at the International Precious Metal Conference held in Chicago in 1980. Throughout his life, Shantibhai was obsessed with the desire of placing the bullion trade on the right path of discipline and he was often critical of the malpractices prevailing in the trade during earlier era. It was Shantibhai who first perfected the technique of assessing gold demand in India based on the number of marriages and families.

He was Awarded recognition for his work by Late Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. He was a Trustee of Babulnath Temple, Mumba Devi Temple and several other Charitable Organizations.

On 11th November, 2000, Brihan Mumbai Mahanagarpalika, Mumbai, in the presence of Smt. Jayvantiben Mehta, Shri Mukul Sonawala, Dr. Jivraj Shah and other Dignitaries, had named the Chowk of Sheikh Memon Street, Zaveri Bazar, Mumbai as “Shantilal N. Sonawala Chowk” to recognize the great work done by Late Shantibhai for Bullion Market.
